Introductory Email

Hello Parents and team members:

Welcome to the Spring season of Madden Flag Football.  My name is Jake Sorem and I am the head coach for your child's team, the Bears.  My assistant coach is Kevin Roloff.  It looks like many of the players were together on the Cardinals last year as I recognize many names.  You may remember that Kevin and I were the substitute coaches the week of pictures.  We had so much fun we decided to do more coaching this year.

Kevin has a background in coaching and playing football, so I will be relying heavily on his experience here.  While I have loved football since I was young and played often with friends, I never played organized football.  I do have experience in a number of other sports including hockey, soft/baseball, volleyball, and wrestling.  And I have regularly helped out at other flag football events and seasons.  I am looking forward to bringing my outside perspective to make things really enjoyable for your players.

I feel it is important to set expectations.  So, here is the priority list for your child under my care:

1. Be safe!  (Avoid injury as much as possible.)  The coaches have received training to help to identify signs of a potential concussion; and the League’s mandate is “When in doubt, sit them out!”  We will be strictly adhering to that mandate for any head impact - even if a player says he feels fine or a parent thinks that their player is ok to continue in a practice or a game.

2. Have Fun! (All players will get to play and touch the ball in every game.)

3. Learn some football fundamentals

It will be fun to win some games too, but I feel that the above is more important.  Also, we will be making sure that all players have a chance to play all positions and contribute.  While we will not force any player to play a particular position if they do not want to (for example, Quarterback, which can be overwhelming).  However, we would want to encourage participation in all positions and work with that player to eventually feel more comfortable with any position in question.

I believe everyone should have been sent the schedule, but if not, let me know and I'll figure out how to get it to you.  Games are played on Sunday afternoons.  Each week I will try to send at least a weekly update which will include the time and field for the game.  As the schedule stands right now, there will not be games on Memorial weekend (May 28) or June 11.  Note, there are games on both Mother's Day and Father's Day.

The first event is the Meet and Greet with practice on Sunday April 23.  We will meet at Mounds View High School at 2:30 (Kevin and I will be at the Director's Booth).  Practice will follow at 3:00 PM.

The first game will be the following Sunday, April 30th at 3:00 PM.

I think that is enough information for this introductory email.  Please feel free to send me or Kevin any questions.  Also, if you feel that there are any concerns with the practice, play, or other aspect of this season, please feel free to express them.  I love to have parental involvement!

Thank you again for participating in the Madden Flag Football program, and have a great day!
